The Russo brothers, the visionary directors behind Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, are taking a deeper dive into the gaming world with the help of Fortnite’s former creative lead, Donald Mustard. While their focus remains on building new intellectual properties, they haven’t ruled out the possibility of an Avengers game in the future.
In a recent interview with Variety, Joe Russo, co-founder of AGBO - their production company was asked whether they would consider developing video games based on Avengers: Doomsday or their upcoming Amazon series Citadel. "We would definitely be open to it," he said, though he emphasized that their priority is crafting large-scale franchises from the ground up.
AGBO has already started expanding its footprint in the gaming industry, most notably with The Electric State: Kid Cosmo, a mobile game tied to their upcoming Netflix movie. However, the real game-changer is Donald Mustard’s addition to the team.
Mustard, one of the key architects behind Fortnite’s global success, is now working with AGBO to revolutionize interactive storytelling. "He's the creator of Fortnite, and he's come in now to work with us on building out what we think the future of storytelling could be," Russo explained. He hinted at an ambitious vision that merges movies, games, and virtual experiences into a singular entertainment universe.
Could an Avengers Game Really Happen?
While an official announcement is yet to be made, the combination of the Russos’ Marvel expertise and Mustard’s gaming background has sparked speculation. Given Fortnite’s long-standing collaboration with Marvel, bringing characters like Iron Man, Thor, and Spider-Man into the game, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to imagine AGBO leading a full-fledged Avengers game.
Russo described AGBO’s long-term goal as creating "true transmedia" experiences, where the same digital assets used in films could seamlessly transition into games and virtual spaces. If executed well, this could redefine how fans engage with their favorite franchises across multiple formats.
With gaming becoming an increasingly dominant force in entertainment, AGBO’s venture into the industry seems timely. Whether or not an Avengers game materializes, their partnership with Mustard signals a new era of storytelling where films and games are no longer separate entities but part of an interconnected world.
For now, Marvel fans can only wait and hope that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will soon return - not just to the big screen but to consoles and PCs as well.
