India vs New Zealand highlights, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: India beat New Zealand by 44 runs, to face Australia in semifinal

India vs New Zealand highlights, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Varun Chakravarthy spearheaded India’s bowling attack with a sensational 5-42, the best figures by any bowler in the tournament so far, as India secured a 44-run victory over New Zealand in their final Group A match at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.

With this win, India finished as Group A toppers and set up a high-stakes semifinal clash against Australia in Dubai on Tuesday, a rematch of the 2023 ODI World Cup final. New Zealand, on the other hand, will face South Africa in the second semifinal at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday.

After Shreyas Iyer’s composed 79 guided India to 249/9 in 50 overs, Chakravarthy bamboozled New Zealand’s batters with his variations on his Champions Trophy debut, taking 5-42 in 10 overs to bowl them out for 205 in 45.3 overs.

For New Zealand, captain Kane Williamson fought a lone battle, crafting a gritty 81 off 120 balls on a challenging surface, using nudges, glances, and inside-out shots to keep his side in contention. However, with India’s spinners tightening the screws in the middle overs, Rohit Sharma & Co. remained unbeaten in the tournament.

India could have struck early in the fourth over had Chakravarthy not spilled a catch at mid-on off Hardik Pandya’s bowling, inadvertently kicking the ball away for four. However, four balls later, Pandya provided the breakthrough as Rachin Ravindra’s attempted upper cut found Axar Patel at deep third for a low diving catch.

Though Williamson and Will Young found a few boundaries, India’s disciplined bowling kept them in check as New Zealand reached 44/1 in the first powerplay. Chakravarthy, getting sharp turn from the surface, got his name on the wickets column when Young inside-edged a googly onto his stumps.

As the Indian spinners extracted more turn, Williamson and Daryl Mitchell opted for a cautious approach, rotating the strike while capitalizing on occasional loose deliveries. Their 44-run stand was broken by Kuldeep Yadav, who deceived Mitchell with a well-flighted googly that spun past his inside edge to trap him lbw for 17.

Williamson battled on, reaching his half-century in 77 balls by guiding Jadeja through fine leg for four. He kept New Zealand in the chase, finding gaps with precise strokes, including an elegant inside-out drive off Jadeja. However, the left-arm spinner had the last laugh, trapping Tom Latham lbw for 14 with a sharp turner.

Jadeja could have dismissed Williamson on 68, but KL Rahul spilled the chance behind the stumps. Chakravarthy, though, struck twice in quick succession, trapping Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell lbw—though replays later showed Bracewell should have survived as the ball was missing the stumps.

The defining moment came when Williamson, looking to accelerate, charged down the track to loft Axar Patel over mid-on but missed, allowing Rahul to complete an easy stumping. His resilient knock of 81 off 120 balls came to an end, leaving New Zealand in deep trouble.

Mitchell Santner struck some late boundaries in a fighting 28 off 31 balls, but Chakravarthy returned to rattle his off-stump, sealing India’s win with a well-deserved five-wicket haul.

India vs New Zealand Live Score: Virat Kohli stunned by flying, one-handed Glenn Phillips catch

Virat Kohli scored only 11 runs in India's final group stage match of the Champions Trophy against New Zealand on Sunday, following his century against Pakistan a week ago.

Glenn Phillips took a spectacular one-handed flying catch at point to dismiss Kohli, who was aiming to maintain his impressive form after achieving his 51st ODI hundred in the previous match.

The Dubai International Cricket Stadium fell silent as Phillips completed the catch. Kohli had no choice but to return to the pavilion after his dismissal.

The match marks a milestone for Kohli as he completed 300 ODIs for India. His unbeaten century against Pakistan in Dubai elevated him to fifth position in the ICC ODI rankings, making him the third player to go past 14,000 runs in 50-over cricket.

Having surpassed Ricky Ponting in the all-time run charts, Kohli now needs 138 runs to overtake Kumar Sangakkara for second place. He trails Sachin Tendulkar, the current record holder, by 4,330 runs.

In his 300 ODI appearances, Kohli has accumulated 14,096 runs with an average of 58.01 and a strike rate of 93.40. His record includes 51 centuries and 73 fifties, with his highest score being 183.

Kohli continues to set records in ODI cricket. He is the quickest to reach several run milestones: 8,000 runs in 175 innings, 9,000 runs in 194 innings, 10,000 runs in 205 innings, 11,000 runs in 222 innings, 12,000 runs in 242 innings, 13,000 runs in 287 innings, and 14,000 runs in 299 innings.

India vs New Zealand Live Score: Virat, Gill, Rohit - all gone! New Zealand rock India's top order

India vs New Zealand Live Score: Virat, Gill, Rohit - all gone! New Zealand rock India's top order

At the toss in Dubai on Sunday, India captain Rohit Sharma said he would have batted first even if he had won the toss. The skipper made sense because India chased in their two matches so far in this Champions Trophy; but the takeoff wasn't as smooth as India would have liked from its top order.

In 6.4 overs, the Kiwi fast bowlers blew away India's in-form top three -- Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. At 30 for 3, India found themselves in a situation they hadn't experienced so far in the tournament.

India's vice-captain Gill (2) had a rare white-ball failure when he was trapped lbw by Matt Henry in the third over, and the video referral he took was of no avail.

In the fifth over, the free-flowing Rohit, who had hit a four and a six in 16 balls to reach 15, was dismissed next ball by Kyle Jamieson, caught by Will Young after mistiming a pull shot.

It followed a special effort by Glenn Phillips at point when he plucked a one-handed stunner to send back India's last-match centurion, Kohli, for 11 when his cut shot against Henry found the fielder. That brought a disappointing end to Kohli's batting stint in his landmark 300th ODI.

It brought all-rounder, who India have promoted to No. 5 lately, in early to join Shreyas Iyer.

In hindsight, the situation offered a good practice to India's middle order ahead of the semifinal - where India would either face Australia or South Africa on Tuesday.

A win against the Kiwis will see India finishing top of Group A and face Australia, while a defeat will keep them at number two for a semifinal meeting with Group B toppers South Africa.

Earlier, contrary to reports that India may test their bench strength, the 2013 champions went in with a full-strength playing XI with just one change, as fast bowler Harshit Rana was replaced by mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy.

India vs New Zealand Live Score: Virat Kohli plays 300th ODI with wife Anushka Sharma, brother Vikas in attendance

Anushka Sharma and Vikas Kohli, wife and elder brother of Virat Kohli, respectively, arrived and made their presence in Dubai on Sunday to witness his 300th ODI match.

Virat has become the seventh Indian cricketer to achieve the milestone of 300 ODI appearances in the final group stage match against New Zealand in Dubai.

Kohli's form across formats was questioned during the lead-up to the Champions Trophy. Despite showing improvement during the three ODIs against England following a challenging Test series in Australia, he still faced criticism.

After scoring 22 runs off 38 balls in India's Champions Trophy opening match against Bangladesh, Kohli found his form in a crucial match against Pakistan in Dubai. The match reminded fans of his memorable T20 World Cup 2022 performance in Melbourne against Pakistan.

Kohli secured victory with a clean shot, celebrated his 51st ODI century, and became the fastest player to reach 14,000 ODI runs.

His 300th ODI appearance didn't add much to his lofty scoring record. A slash outside off to a Matt Henry delivery was taken remarkably by Glenn Phillips who took it one-handed. Kohli could only add 11 runs to his ODI tally.

In his 300 ODI appearances, Kohli has accumulated 14,096 runs with an average of 58.01 and a strike rate of 93.40. His record includes 51 centuries and 73 fifties, with his highest score being 193.

Throughout his career, Kohli has consistently broken records in ODI cricket. He holds the record for being the fastest to reach multiple milestones: 8,000 runs in 175 innings, 9,000 runs in 194 innings, 10,000 runs in 205 innings, 11,000 runs in 222 innings, 12,000 runs in 242 innings, 13,000 runs in 287 innings, and 14,000 runs in 299 innings.

India vs New Zealand Live Score: 'Probability of losing 13 tosses is 0.0122%'

India's streak of bad luck at the toss continued on Sunday as they lost their 13th consecutive coin flip in ODIs.

Facing New Zealand in their final Group A match of the Champions Trophy, India once again found themselves at the mercy of the opposition’s decision.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bowl first, further extending India's frustrating record.

The last time India won an ODI toss dates back to the 2023 Wankhede semifinal. Since then, Rohit has lost 10 tosses, while KL Rahul has had no luck with the coin three times, making this prolonged streak a talking point among fans and analysts alike.

The statistical probability of losing 13 consecutive tosses stands at a minuscule 0.0122%, as highlighted by countless posts across social media platforms.

The fans couldn't hide their reactions, lamenting India's poor luck and jokingly speculating if the team needs a change in coin-flipping strategy.

Memes and humor flooded platforms like X (formerly Twitter), with some suggesting captain Rohit Sharma should find his luck for the knock-out stages of the tournament, while others devoured the bitterness of the situation with a pinch of laughter.

Despite the toss setback, India made a strategic change to their lineup, resting Harshit Rana and bringing in spinner Varun Chakravarthy. Meanwhile, New Zealand also made a single change, with Daryl Mitchell replacing Devon Conway.

While losing the toss does not directly impact performance on the field, it does influence game plans, especially in conditions where batting or bowling first provides a significant advantage.

India vs New Zealand highlights, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: India capped off their Group A campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy with a commanding 44-run victory over New Zealand, thanks to Shreyas Iyer’s composed 79 and Varun Chakaravarthy’s stellar 5/42. The win secured India’s place at the top of the table and set up a highly anticipated semifinal clash with Australia.

Despite Iyer’s fighting knock, India struggled early, losing three wickets for just 30 runs. New Zealand pacer Matt Henry produced a lethal spell, finishing with figures of 5/42 and restricting India to a modest 249/9. However, India’s spinners ensured it was enough as they bowled out the Blackcaps for 205 in 45.3 overs.

After the match, Chakaravarthy admitted to initial nerves but credited his senior teammates for keeping him calm.

"In 2021, I didn’t have a great tournament in Dubai, looks good right now. Team is doing well and it feels good. I was nervous during my first spell, previous outings here were playing on my mind. Virat bhai, Hardik bhai, Rohit bhai helped to keep my calm," Chakaravarthy said.

He also reflected on how adapting his approach helped his success, adding, "I try to sequence my spell in T20s and it’s a bit different in 50-over. Playing domestic cricket helped my awareness and allowed me to plan my spells better. It’s more of patience game as ball didn’t turn fast, turned slow. The pitch was not a rank turner."

India’s spin attack was at its best, with Chakaravarthy leading the charge. His precise line and variations troubled New Zealand’s batters throughout their innings. Kane Williamson waged a lone battle with a classy 81 but lacked support as wickets kept tumbling.

New Zealand’s chase never gained momentum after Hardik Pandya struck early to dismiss Rachin Ravindra. Williamson built a steady 44-run partnership with Daryl Mitchell, but Kuldeep Yadav broke the stand by trapping Mitchell lbw. The dismissals of Tom Latham (14), Glenn Phillips (12), and Michael Bracewell (2) in quick succession further dented New Zealand’s hopes.

Williamson showed his trademark elegance, playing crisp strokes, but his resistance ended when Axar Patel bowled a fuller delivery that led to a sharp stumping by KL Rahul. With Williamson’s departure, India sealed the game.

With this victory, India now gear up to face Australia in the first semifinal in Dubai, while New Zealand will meet South Africa in Lahore.
