Caleb Williams isn’t easing into Year 2 of his NFL journey. Instead, he’s being thrust into a fast-paced, high-expectation environment by newly appointed Chicago Bears head coach
Ben Johnson. As the Bears became one of the few teams allowed to begin offseason training early—thanks to their new coaching staff—Williams is finding himself right in the thick of an ambitious rebuild centered around growth, discipline, and detail.
Ben Johnson wastes no time testing Caleb Williams just two days into Bears' offseason program
Ben Johnson, known for orchestrating one of the most dynamic offenses in the league with the Detroit Lions, wasted no time making his presence felt at Halas Hall. Just two days into the program, he’s already making a lasting impression—not just with his energy, but with his focus on structure and accountability.
“Today we had our first quiz in the quarterback room,” Caleb Williams shared via The Associated Press. “It’s not like a real quiz where you have to write stuff. It’s just us. We went over a few things yesterday, talked about a few things and Ben walked in this morning, flung open the door, made a grand entrance and then we got to work, of him testing us about what we talked about yesterday."

That pop quiz wasn’t just for theatrics—it symbolized Johnson’s vision for a culture of constant challenge. “Already, first day in, and challenging us,” Williams added. “Everybody loves a challenge in this sport. It’s one of the great things about this sport. Every day is a challenge and today we got our first one.”
But this isn’t about gimmicks. Johnson’s emphasis on mental sharpness is aligned with his broader strategic focus: building a high-efficiency offense rooted in Expected Points Added (EPA), precision footwork, and increased usage of under-center formations. “Whatever team has the higher passing game EPA at the end of the game, they generally win that game, it's over 80% of the time,” Johnson noted at last week’s league meeting. “It's a huge stat and that's where we look to, how do we help inflate that number? Higher completion percentage, more run after catch opportunities."
That level of detail contrasts sharply with what Bears GM Ryan Poles admitted about last year’s shortcomings. Poles confessed “steps were skipped” in preparing Williams as a rookie. But with Johnson’s hands-on approach, it’s clear that won’t happen again.
Williams is embracing the shift. “I think us growing together is key,” he said. “Him pushing me is key. I know that and he knows that. So building that bond, him pushing me and us growing together for years to come is going to be fun.”
He’s not just talking about Xs and Os. The team chemistry is also taking root. “We’ve meshed well these past two days of introduction, and now today of our first workout,” Williams said. “We’re all really excited and we can’t wait to put in the work … That doesn’t just mean us putting in time on the board... It’s also us hanging out in the offseason, building that bond.”
Part of that bonding comes with adjusting to a more under-center offense—something new for Williams after a shotgun-heavy rookie season. But he welcomes the adjustment: “It’s practicing those things now, visualizing those things now and building on those.”
The message is clear: Ben Johnson is here to elevate Caleb Williams, and in the process, resurrect a proud but struggling franchise. With a coach who values precision and a quarterback hungry to be great, Chicago’s foundation for 2025 is already being poured—one quiz, one rep, and one bond at a time.
